Maria's profile

I was born in Truro, Cornwall in 1986. I have one older brother, we lived in Penzance near to Cape Cornwall Golf Club which is where I started playing at the age of 11. As well as golf I had a very keen interest in tennis. I played county tennis from the age of 8 to the age of 10. I then realised that to succeed and to become a professional I had to concentrate on one sport, so golf it was.

At the age of 11 I won the under 15's girls championships and went on to win this every year until the age of 15. At the age of 15 I was playing off a 5 handicap representing Cornwall. While I was at school I knew all I wanted to do was play golf when I left. I was also chosen for the under 16 girls England Elite squad when I was 15. When I was 16 was chosen to run with the baton for the Queens Golden Jubilee through Penzance because of my golfing achievements so far.

When i left school I went to Penwith College and studied Sports studies BTEC National Diploma. During this time I took on a job at my local spar convenience store to pay to play my golf. Once I had achieved my diploma I went on to work full time at West cornwall Golf Club as assistant Professional. Whilst working there I studied for my PGA Degree which lasted 3 years. I then graduated at Birmingham University where I received my diploma of which much to my pleasure was presented to me by Sir Bobby Charlton.

I then entered various competitions whilst working and teaching at West Cornwall golf club and set out to achieve some very good results. As time went on I then decided the only way to further my career was to leave Cornwall, so I left in 2011. I moved to East Sussex where I was offered a job as a Qualified Golf Professional. This time was a difficult time moving away from my family but this was a great opportunity to get that step closer to my dreams.

Since I have moved to east sussex I have entered and played in a number of events and these results have proved to be the best I have ever had and continue to improve the more I play.
